Professor Jiping ZHANG, a core member of the International Center for Mathematics of Southern University of Science and Technology, has been appointed as the 2019 new member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on November 22, 2019. The academy unveiled the list which of new appointees which included 64 members in total, including 20 foreign academicians. With the election of Professor Jiping ZHANG to the academy's, the number of Academicians at International Center for Mathematics reaches 3.
Professor Jiping ZHANG is a core member of the International Center for Mathematics of Southern University of Science and Technology. He has made outstanding contributions to the establishment and construction of the Center. In February 2019, Professor Jiping ZHANG organized the International Algebra Conference at the Mathematics Center with the Fields Prize winner Efim Zelmanov, and invited many domestic and foreign scholars to come together to promote academic exchanges at home and abroad, expanding the mathematics center influence.
Jiping ZHANG is a professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University, deputy director of the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research, director of the Key Laboratory of Mathematics and Applied Ministry of Education, and chairman of the Beijing Mathematical Society. He is currently the editor-in-chief of Asia-European J. Math. and the associate editor of the Journal of Mathematical Sciences. He is Former Vice Chairman of the Chinese Mathematical Society, Executive Deputy Director of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education, and Chief Editor of Algebra Colloquium.
Professor Jiping ZHANG made outstanding contributions in the early 1980s by applying the century theorem of finite simple group classification. The first one to give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a zero-loss P-block, to solve the famous Brauer 39 problem, and to work with others to solve Brauer 40 questions. He developed the group's arithmetic theory, and then solved long-standing unsolved problems such as Huppert's conjecture and conjugate class length conjecture, and studied spectral problems such as the Deedkind-Zeta-function in the number field and Laplace-Beltrami operator on the Riemannian manifold Get applied. He also solved the S3-conjecture for solvable groups, proved the new p-nilpotency criterion, and made important results in terms of fusion systems and modular representation theory. He and his students made a leading result on the international front-line focus problem of modular representation theory-Alperin's right conjecture.
Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) International Center for Mathematics was the launched on February 22nd and is now beginning to take shape. Professor Jiping ZHANG was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which has further strengthened the center's talent team and will provide a larger platform and make important contributions to the center's promotion of first-class discipline for the center's talent construction, and the training of top mathematics talents.
